Manopause, Midlife Crisis, Male Menopause & Andropause:Why Men’s Midlife Health Belongs on the Workplace and Healthcare Agenda

Dr A McIlwraith

For too long, men’s midlife health challenges have been overlooked in comparison to the well-established awareness and supports available for women’s menopause. Terms like “midlife crisis” have trivialised what is, in reality, a complex and significant health issue: manopause (andropause) — a gradual decline in testosterone and related hormonal changes that can affect men physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What is Manopause?

Unlike menopause in women, testosterone decline is gradual, typically around 1% per year after 40. For many men, this results in:

  • Fatigue, low energy, and poor sleep

  • Weight gain and metabolic changes

  • Reduced libido and sexual health concerns

  • Low mood, anxiety, and loss of confidence

  • Concentration issues and “brain fog”

  • Increased cardiovascular and cancer risks

Without awareness and support, these symptoms can negatively impact not only the individual but also their workplace, family, and wider community.

Workshops for Awareness, Equity & Action

Our Manopause Workshops are designed for organisations, healthcare providers, and insurers seeking to deliver equity of treatment between male and female employees, while fulfilling obligations under health and safety, industrial relations, and equality legislation.

The workshops provide:

  • Practical education about manopause and its symptoms

  • Strategies for self-care, resilience, and health management

  • Guidance for managers, HR teams, and insurers to support men in midlife transitions

  • Safe spaces where men feel comfortable engaging in open conversations about health

The Benefits

For Men

  • Better understanding of their health and options

  • Reduced stigma around seeking support

  • Greater resilience, confidence, and quality of life

For Employers & HR Departments

  • Improved workplace wellbeing, performance, and retention

  • Reduced absenteeism linked to midlife health challenges

  • Demonstrable compliance with equality, health & safety legislation

  • Positive reputation for inclusion and employee care

For Healthcare Providers & Insurers

  • Enhanced preventative care and earlier interventions

  • Reduced long-term costs through proactive support

  • Alignment with equity commitments and evolving healthcare standards

Why Now?

Just as organisations have embraced menopause policies for women, it is now time to extend equity to men. Recognising and supporting manopause is not just a health issue — it is a matter of compliance, fairness, and progressive workplace practice.
